3D Studio Max: Using a Displacement map to create Landscapes

Here is an easy way to create a good looking landscape using the Displace modifier in 3D Studio Max.

To start with, you have to create a displacement map.You can do this in photoshop. This is basically a gray scale/black & white image which represents the area of displacement.Take a look at the image below:

In 3D Max,create a plane and apply from the modifier dropdown, a Displace modifier.Click and select our displacement map on the bitmap slot.

Try varying the strength parameter to make the landscape the way you want.

Tips for making a convincing CG Animation

When you are trying to create a photo realistic 3D animation, the tough as well as the most important part is to make it look convincing.Obviously this involves a lot of steps, starting from choosing the right texture, the lighting, the renderer so on and so forth. But today I am gonna tell you the 4 most important factors to consider and work on while doing a CG shot.

1.Frame Rate:
By default, most of the 3D applications render out the video sequences in 30FPS.This is to facilitate further need of frame rate alterations but most of us just go with the default fps and that makes the animation looks amateurish.Try to keep your animation frame rate at 24FPS.You can do this in your editing package as well. This will skip a couple of frames from your video and give it a Film Look.

2.Depth of Field:

Another very important factor which most of our regional animators conveniently forgets to use.Using a DOF in your 3D animation gives it a much natural feel and that sequence will blend seamlessly with the rest of your real footage. Its a bit difficult to use the 3D package's built in DOF generators but you can easily mock them by rendering out a Z-DEPTH sequence of the video and later use it on your compositing package to apply the needed blur.

3.Camera Movements:
Amateurish is when you see wiggly camera moves on a live action movie. But Professionalism is when you see wiggly camera moves on a CG movie. :) I think you got what i meant.

4.Film Noise:
A real scene is never that saturated and sharp. Add in some noise and blur to your CG shot.Use a screen shot from a real footage for reference and keep it subtle.

Movie of the Week : The Breakfast Club (1985)

Directed by John Hughes. With Judd Nelson,Emilio Estevez and Molly Ringwald.

The Breakfast Club is a 1985 comedy drama film which become a cult classic and has had a tremendous influence on many coming of age films since then. It was shot entirely in sequence. Shooting began on March 28, 1984, and ended in May 1984.

Synopsis:
They were five students with nothing in common, faced with spending a Saturday detention together in their high school library. At 7 a.m., they had nothing to say, but by 4 p.m., they had bared their souls to each other.

Verdict:
To younger viewers, this movie will appear to be outdated. The only thing "outdated" is the clothing styles and the music. It doesnt matter what year you went to high school or what school you even went to, there will always be a "criminal", a "jock", a "princess", a "nerd", and a "basket case". This movie is the best teenage movie, no matter when you were a teenager!

What is Continuum FingerBoard?

The Continuum Fingerboard or Haken Continuum is a music performance controller developed by Lippold Haken, a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, and sold by Haken Audio, located in Champaign, Illinois. The Continuum is a MIDI controller; it does not generate audio. Rather, it must be connected to a sound-producing source that will receive MIDI input, such as a synthesizer module. The most recent model has begun to incorporate built in sounds, and can generate audio, but it is still primarily designed to be a controller.

A Continuum FingerBoard produces amazing sound that a lot of Music Composers use them creatively. The one I personally adore is the AR Rahman's version.

Movie of the Week : Clue (1985)

Directed by Jonathan Lynn. With Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry and Christopher Lloyd.

Clue is a 1985 comedy film based on the board game of the same name. The film is a murder mystery set in a Gothic Revival mansion. The movie was shot with three different endings and in the DVD release, we can watch all the three.

They are met by the house butler, Wadsworth (Tim Curry), who reminds them each that they have been given pseudonyms to protect their true identity. During dinner the seventh guest, Mr. Boddy, arrives. After dinner, Wadsworth reveals the true nature of the party: all of the guests are being blackmailed to hide their secrets.

Verdict:
Amazing performance by Tim Curry and the whole gang. Witty Dialogues. Situational Humour. Its definitely one of a kind. Worth Watching before bed after a very hectic day!
